🐈 Your cat's diet is missing something

Tuesday 7/15: Sponsored by Identity Pet Nutrition - Caterwauling, get cat to eat, cat helps owner

"You don’t train a cat. You earn the right to be trained by one."

Happy Tuesday:

Why Is My Cat…?

Why is my cat only eating at night (or when I’m asleep)?

(scroll to the bottom to find the answer!)

Is Your Cat Crying Loudly at Night?

You’re settling in for the night when suddenly, your cat lets out a long, loud yowl that sounds like it came from a haunted house. This dramatic cry is called caterwauling, and while it can be startling, it’s usually your cat’s way of saying, “Hey, something’s up!”

Caterwauling is different from a meow—it’s more intense, more drawn out, and often more urgent. Some cats do it to get your attention. Others may be reacting to a medical issue, like arthritis or feline dementia. And if your cat is in the litter box while crying, that could signal a urinary problem.

Female cats in heat are also known for caterwauling—it’s essentially a feline mating call. Spaying can quiet these vocal heat cycles.

If your cat’s caterwauling is behavioral, try boosting daily enrichment: playtime, vertical spaces, and interactive toys can help relieve stress and boredom. And while the sound may seem alarming, it’s your cat’s version of sending up a flare.

Easy Fixes for a Picky Cat Appetite

Mealtime struggles aren’t unusual for cat parents. While some cats love their food, others need a little convincing. If your cat skips meals but seems otherwise healthy, a few changes to their routine can help bring their appetite back.

Start with scent: cats rely on smell more than taste. Warm up their food slightly or try mixing in a little wet food, low-sodium broth, or tuna water to boost aroma. Make sure their dish is clean and their kibble isn’t stale, especially if it's been sitting open for a while.

Location matters, too. Some cats avoid eating near noisy appliances, high-traffic areas, or other pets. Try feeding them in a calm, quiet space, and offer multiple bowls in multi-cat homes to avoid competition.

Adding a short play session before meals can also help stimulate appetite. And if your cat suddenly stops eating or avoids food for more than a day, call your vet, especially if you notice other changes.

The Cat Who Helped His Owner Fight Cancer

When Savaş Yeşilça was diagnosed with cancer at 27, he was far from family. But he wasn’t alone—his rescue cat, Shiva, was there for every hard moment. The first night after his diagnosis, Shiva curled up on his chest and never left his side.

As Savaş started chemotherapy, Shiva stayed close, resting his head on the scar from a biopsy, curling up when Savaş came home exhausted, and even skipping meals just to be near him. “He became my silent, loving caregiver,” Savaş said.

Shiva had always been a companion, but through cancer, he became something more—a support system, nurse, and friend.

Now cancer-free, Savaş says, “He helped me destroy cancer in his own way.”
