Martini the Cat Doesn’t Want to Say Goodbye

After two weeks of fostering two tiny kittens, one NYC couple knew it was time to say goodbye. But their cat Martini had other plans. When her humans picked up the kitten carrier, Martini repeatedly jumped up and tried to stop them from leaving.

It turns out she’d grown more attached than anyone expected. Martini had spent every day with Phoebe and Joey, who followed her everywhere like she was their big sister. Her reaction at the door, pawing at the carrier and blocking their path, left everyone stunned.

Even now, Martini runs to the door whenever she hears a sound, as if hoping her little friends are back. Her human, Alissa, said she never realized how deeply Martini bonded with the kittens.

The emotional moment, caught on video, went viral with hundreds of thousands of views. And yes, many people cried right along with Martini.

Your Cat is Misunderstood

When your cat scratches furniture, bites unexpectedly, or meows nonstop, it might seem like they’re being ā€œbad.ā€ But most feline misbehavior is actually a response to unmet needs or miscommunication, and it’s usually fixable.

One of the biggest issues? We misread their body language. For example, if your cat swats after a few pets, they’re probably overstimulated, not mean. Cats who counter-surf or scratch the sofa may just be seeking height, stimulation, or a sturdier scratcher.

Lack of playtime or routine can also lead to trouble. Bored cats get creative: chewing plants, knocking things over, or acting clingy. Simple changes like setting up climbing shelves, offering puzzle feeders, or sticking to predictable mealtimes can make a big difference.

And sometimes, it’s health-related. Peeing outside the box, sudden aggression, or constant vocalizing may signal discomfort or illness. If your cat’s behavior shifts suddenly, a vet check is always a good first step.

The good news? When we take time to understand what our cats are telling us, they usually calm down. It’s less about discipline and more about decoding.

How Art Is Helping Shelter Cats Get Noticed

Kids across the U.S. and Canada are picking up pencils and paint to help rescue cats find homes—and the results are as heartwarming as they are effective.

Through programs like The Empathy Pawject in Calgary, students are assigned a real adoptable cat to paint. They learn about the cat’s quirks and personality, then share their finished portraits in local galleries and online. One student painted a fluffy cat named Mowgli, surrounded by joyful bursts of color, and helped her get adopted.

On Long Island, Rescue Advocates of Long Island (RALI) displays hand-painted cat portraits in shelters, especially for ā€œlong-timersā€ who’ve waited months. Once adopted, their new family takes home the portrait as a gift. Some families keep them for years.

For the kids, it’s more than art. They get to know the cats through their stories and photos, and they feel a real connection. One mom said the experience helped her child grow not just as an artist, but as a kind, thoughtful person.
