🐈 Why your cat cares what's in their bowl

Thursday 7/31: Sponsored by Identity Pet Nutrition - Kittens holding paws, changing food, cover face sleeping

"You’ll never have a more honest roommate than a cat."

Happy Thursday:

True or False?

Kittens are born blind and deaf.

These Two Kittens Made A Heart Together

At just 13 weeks old, Colleen already knows how to win hearts. When a shelter worker at South Carolina’s Humane Society of York County walked in one morning, she found Colleen and another kitten, Pedro Pascal, quietly holding paws through their kennels.

“They weren’t even playing,” she said. “They were just lying there with their hands together. It looked like they were making a little heart.”

Though they weren’t littermates, the pair had clearly formed a sweet bond. Pedro was adopted soon after, but Colleen stayed behind, still waiting for a home of her own.

She’s friendly, fixed, fully vaccinated, and loves cuddling just as much as she loves playing. The staff says she'd thrive in a home with another kitten.

How To Switch Cat Food Without Trouble

Changing a cat’s food isn’t always as simple as swapping one bowl for another, especially if your cat’s picky or has a sensitive stomach. A sudden switch can lead to tummy issues or food avoidance, so it’s best to take it slow.

The ideal transition lasts 10 days: Start with 75% old food and 25% new, then slowly increase the new and reduce the old. If your cat turns up their nose, try warming the food, sprinkling crushed treats on top, or mixing textures. Some cats need extra encouragement to try pâtÊ, shreds, or gravy blends.

Watch for digestive issues like diarrhea or vomiting. If that happens, go even slower—or ask your vet for help. You might need to test a few flavors or formats before you land on something your cat likes and tolerates.

And remember: it’s okay if they take time. With a little patience and a few tricks, even the most particular felines can learn to love what’s in their bowl.

Why Is My Cat Covering Their Face to Sleep?

If you’ve ever caught your cat napping with a paw over their face, you’re not alone—and it’s just as cute as it is mysterious. But there are practical reasons behind the pose.

Sometimes it’s a light blocker, especially for cats sleeping in sunny spots. Other times, it’s a way to stay warm: curling up tight and covering the nose helps retain body heat. It may also be instinct: shielding their face makes them feel safe and hidden while they rest.

Some cats simply find the position comfy. Like humans hugging pillows, it’s just their version of cozy. And occasionally, it’s a polite “do not disturb.” When the face is tucked, they’re asking for quiet time.

So the next time your cat buries their face mid-nap, enjoy the view—just don’t wake them up.
