True or False?
It is generally recommended to place litter boxes away from a cat's food and water.

This Sailboat Was Home to Dozens of Cats
When officers responded to reports of an abandoned sailboat off the coast of Tacoma, Washington, they expected an empty vessel. Instead, they found roughly 40 cats and kittens living aboard, tucked into every corner of the boat.
Getting them to safety took real teamwork. Since the boat was only reachable by water, Marine Services officers, Animal Control, and Forensic Technicians worked together to corral the cats into carriers and ferry them to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County. One officer described the scene as looking "like a Studio Ghibli movie," with cats freely roaming their floating home.
Despite the cramped, unsanitary conditions, there were signs someone had been trying to care for them, feeding and watering the group even as their numbers likely grew unchecked over time.
By the next afternoon, 31 cats had already made it safely off the boat. With help from the community and a good spay-and-neuter reminder from local Animal Control, these cats are officially on their way to finding calmer waters ahead.

A Guide to Every Type of Litter Box
Picking the right litter box comes down to a cat's personality, mobility, and habits, plus a little trial and error along the way. Here's a quick rundown of the main styles worth knowing.
π¦ Open pan β Simple, affordable, and easy to clean. Great for multi-cat homes, though odor control isn't its strong suit.
β¬οΈ High-sided β Perfect for enthusiastic diggers or kickers, though the taller walls can be tricky for less mobile cats.
πΎ Low-entry β Ideal for seniors, kittens, or cats recovering from injury, thanks to an easy step-in design.
π Sifting β Makes cleanup faster by separating waste from clean litter, great for busy households.
π Covered β Traps odor and mess well, and offers privacy, though not every cat loves the enclosed feel.
π€ Self-cleaning β Automates scooping entirely, a big time-saver, though it comes with a bigger price tag and isn't safe for young kittens.
πͺ Litter box furniture β Not a litter box itself, but a stylish way to hide one in plain sight.
The right choice really depends on the cat. Watching how they respond, and being ready to adjust, usually leads to the best fit.

Breed Spotlight: California Spangled
The California Spangled Cat has a story that starts, of all places, in Hollywood. A playwright and scriptwriter developed the breed in the 1980s, aiming for a spotted coat that mimicked a leopard's, the idea being that owners could match their cat's exotic look with their own wardrobe.
Beyond the striking coat, these cats are athletic, curious, and surprisingly affectionate. They're excellent hunters, quick learners, and generally get along well with kids and other pets once properly socialized. Most weigh between 8 and 15 pounds and live anywhere from 9 to 16 years, staying spunky well into adulthood even as kittens mellow with age.
Caring for one is fairly straightforward. Their short coat only needs brushing twice a week, and a high-protein diet keeps them healthy, though they're prone to overeating if food isn't measured out. Their intelligence also makes them surprisingly trainable, some can even learn to walk on a leash or come when called, provided owners bring plenty of patience.
Today, the breed is quite rare, and finding a breeder often means a bit of a wait. But for anyone drawn to a cat with a wild look and a genuinely loyal personality, the California Spangled makes for a memorable companion.
