The Surprising Origins of Your Favorite Cat Phrases
You've probably said "curiosity killed the cat" without thinking twice about where it came from. When playwright Ben Jonson used it back in 1598, it wasn't about curiosity at all. The original phrase used "care," meaning excessive worry, and the modern version didn't fully take hold until the late 1800s. The rejoinder "but satisfaction brought it back" was only added in the early 20th century.
Then there's "raining cats and dogs," which has been debated for years. One popular theory ties it to flooding so severe that dead animals floated down the street. Another traces it to the Greek phrase cata doxa, meaning something that defies belief. The thatched-roof explanation is almost certainly a myth, mostly because cats and dogs are smarter than that.
And "the cat's pajamas"? That one comes straight from the Jazz Age, when people loved attaching animals to impossible objects to describe something exceptional. It shared the era with "the bee's knees" and the slightly less memorable "the snake's eyebrows."

Could We Communicate With Cats One Day?
If you've ever had a full conversation with your cat and wondered whether any of it landed, researchers are actually working on it. Scientists have been studying how cats vocalize specifically with humans (the meows, chirps, and trills they reserve almost exclusively for their people) and working to decode what those sounds mean.
Some research suggests cats develop a personalized communication system with their owners, adjusting their sounds based on what tends to get a response. AI is now being applied to that data, with tools that can analyze vocalizations and match them to context and meaning. It's still early, but the gap between what your cat is trying to say and what you actually understand may be closing.

Meet Cat of the Day, Rascal Cat
Reader Andrew introduced us to Rascal Cat, who showed up in his life in the most unexpected way: literally dropped at his feet by a wild mother cat, along with three of his littermates. That was almost four years ago, and Andrew says time has flown.
Rascal Cat came into the world with the kind of origin story that suits his name. A wild beginning, an unexpected landing, and four years later, a permanent spot in Andrew's home and heart.
