What Coral Reefs Have To Do With Cat Food

Coral reefs are more than colorful underwater landscapes. They support fish populations that are part of complex marine food webs, including species used in some cat foods. When reefs decline, fish habitats shrink, which can affect long-term sustainability.

That connection is central to Sheba’s Hope Grows initiative. The cat food brand has invested in coral reef restoration projects around the world, recognizing that healthier reefs can help sustain healthier fish populations. By supporting reef recovery, the program aims to strengthen marine ecosystems that seafood sourcing depends on.

In Hawai‘i and other global sites, restoration teams install “reef stars,” underwater structures designed to anchor and regrow broken coral. Over time, restored coral creates shelter and breeding grounds for marine life, helping rebuild local fish communities.

The effort highlights a broader idea: protecting ocean habitats isn’t separate from the pet food industry. For brands that rely on fish ingredients, long-term sustainability starts beneath the surface with the reefs that help marine ecosystems thrive.

Sick of Bread Getting Moldy Before You Can Finish It?

Today’s newsletter is sponsored by Wildgrain. They make it easier for you to enjoy bread that’s both delicious and better for you than typical grocery store options. All of Wildgrain's breads are slow fermented for 20+ hours, which not only delivers incredible flavor but also makes them naturally easier to digest.

In addition to the delicious breads, fill your Wildgrain box with slow-churned butter, fresh pastas, and seasonal artisanal pastries. Everything bakes from frozen in just 25 minutes or less. They have an all new gluten-free box with the best gluten-free breads you’ve ever had. Wildgrain is giving Daily Purr readers $30 off their first box plus free croissants in every box!

Why Does Your Cat Suddenly Get The Zoomies?

One minute your cat is peacefully lounging. The next, they launch across the room at full speed. No loud noise. No obvious trigger. Just pure, chaotic energy.

Veterinarians say this behavior is rooted in instinct. Cats evolved to conserve energy through long stretches of rest followed by short bursts of intense activity. Even indoor cats still follow that neurological rhythm. These sudden sprints, often called FRAPs (frenetic random activity periods), help them burn off excess energy and keep their muscles and reflexes sharp.

Sometimes there is a trigger, even if humans can’t detect it. Cats have highly sensitive hearing and smell, and subtle shifts in sound, scent, or movement can spark action. Other times, it’s simply the internal “hunt” cycle kicking in without real prey.

As long as the bursts are brief and your cat settles quickly afterward, it’s considered completely normal. A little playtime and enrichment can help channel that energy but the occasional zoom is just your cat being a cat.

Vet Bills Won’t Break the Bank If You Have the Right Insurance

Surprise vet bills can certainly bite. But fear not, pet insurance can be your lifeline. Some plans cover major surgeries — which can cost up to $7,000 — so you can afford the best care for your pet. Check out our top-rated pet insurance providers, with some plans offering coverage for just $1 a day, multi-pet coverage, and reimbursement options of up to 90%. With the right coverage, you could keep your pet (and your wallet) happy.
