When rescue crews responded to a tragic fall at Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park, they expected only heartbreak. Two hikers had fallen nearly 400 feet to their deaths at a viewpoint known as Inspiration Point. But near the scene, something caught a rescuer’s eye: a small animal carrier that looked like it had somehow survived the drop.

Inside was a cat—alive. She was shaken but miraculously unharmed. Rescuers believe the carrier helped cushion the impact. The cat, now named Mirage, had been traveling with the hikers. Though the details of her fall remain uncertain, one thing was clear: her survival defied the odds.

As if that weren’t moving enough, the helicopter pilot who helped lift her to safety made a life-changing decision. Touched by the moment, he chose to adopt Mirage himself. After such trauma, she wouldn’t return to a shelter or be passed around. She’d go home with someone who truly cared.

Now, Mirage is safe, loved, and settling into a quiet life—far from the cliffs, but never far from the people who saved her.

Meet Ash—ringleader, food thief, and occasional escape artist. Daily Purr reader Noemi says he's one of three cats in the house, and definitely the one calling the shots.

Ash is clever, bold, and always plotting something. He opens drawers, swipes snacks mid-meal, and regularly tests the front door to see if life outside might be more exciting. (Spoiler: it’s not.)

Brushing your cat doesn’t have to be a battle—or a mystery. With a little patience and the right tools, it can become part of your routine and even something your cat enjoys (or at least tolerates). Start when your cat is calm and relaxed, ideally in a quiet space where they feel safe in.

The brush you choose depends on their coat. Short-haired cats do well with gloves or slicker brushes, while long-haired breeds benefit from deshedding tools and mat rakes. Always check for signs of mats, flaky skin, or fleas before brushing. If you find tangles, avoid pulling—use your fingers or a detangling spray on the brush (not directly on the cat).

Begin with areas most cats like—like the head or back—before tackling more sensitive spots like the belly or tail. If your cat pulls away or seems stressed, pause and try again later. Positive reinforcement (treats or toys) can help your cat associate brushing with something good.

Long-haired cats need daily brushing to avoid painful mats. Short-haired cats may only need it once a week. Either way, brushing helps reduce shedding and keeps their coat healthy, and gives you a chance to check in on their skin, nails, and overall health.
