Make Spring Cleaning Less Weird for Your Cat

For us, spring cleaning feels like a reset. For our cats, it can feel like their entire world has shifted. Suddenly, their cozy corners are missing, the couch smells different, and the vacuum is way too active. It’s a lot—especially for creatures who thrive on routine.

The trick is to go slow. If you’re planning to move things around, give your cat time to adjust before changing everything at once. Add a second litter box or bed to the new spot first, then wait a few days before removing the original.

Keep something familiar in reach—like their favorite blanket or a worn sweatshirt. A familiar scent can make a new setup feel safe. And if you can, clean when they’re napping in another room. The vacuum is never a favorite guest.

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be stressful for your cat. With a few tweaks, you can freshen up your space and still make your home feel steady, safe, and very much theirs too.

Cats of the Day, Ava & Mikey

Daily Purr reader Wendie introduces us to Ava and Mikey—two recent rescues now living their best lives. Ava, the luxurious black floof, and Mikey, the sweet tuxedo, have quickly discovered the joys of soft beds, warm windows, and a home that’s all theirs.

Whether they’re curled up for a cozy nap or soaking in the calm of their new space, these two are clearly settling in. Mikey’s tucked-in pose says “finally safe,” while Ava lounges like she was born to reign over the fluffiest bed in the house.

Thanks, Wendie, for giving Ava and Mikey the home they deserve! Want to see your cat featured as the Daily Purr Cat of the Day? Send in a photo and some fun facts about your kitty—they might be next!

What to Do When Cats Clash at Home

If your cats aren't getting along, it’s not about hate—it’s about stress, territory, and instinct. The good news? There’s a lot you can do to help.

Start with space and resources. Each cat should have their own food and water bowls, litter boxes (the rule is one per cat, plus one extra), scratchers, and cozy spots to retreat to. Spread these around the house so they don’t feel cornered or forced to share.

Add structure. Play with each cat separately and together once or twice a day. Wand toys and treat puzzles burn energy, relieve tension, and create positive associations. Give them low-pressure time near each other—like lounging in the same room during treat time—so they learn good things happen when the other is around.

Watch their cues. Ears back, tense bodies, or stalking signals rising stress. Before it escalates, gently redirect with a toy or toss a treat to shift their attention. Don’t scold or punish—it only adds fear.

If fights keep happening, separate them completely and slowly reintroduce with short, positive sessions. And if things still feel stuck, a certified feline behaviorist can help tailor a plan.

Small changes can make a big difference. Cats don’t need to be best friends—but with the right steps, they often can learn to share a home without conflict.
