Stray Cat Brings Her Babies To Safety

For nearly a year, Kate admired a shy Los Angeles stray she called The Mayor. Everyone thought the cat was male, until a neighbor discovered she’d given birth on his roof.

Before Kate could move the family somewhere safer, The Mayor took charge. She carried her kittens across a fence one by one, though one baby slipped near a pile of cinder blocks and needed a quick rescue.

That kitten led Kate and her neighbor straight to the rest of the litter, tucked beneath a shed in Kate’s backyard. Soon, The Mayor and her three babies were warm and safe inside.

The protective mom slowly relaxed and showed her affectionate side. Her kittens, Rigby, Mordecai, and Margaret, also recovered from early health challenges and grew stronger.

The kittens are now preparing for adoption, while Kate’s neighbor plans to give The Mayor a permanent home. She picked exactly the right humans.

The Science Behind A Cat’s Perfect Landing

Cats make landing on four paws look effortless, but there’s some impressive biology happening in midair. A new study from Japan offers a closer look at how their flexible spines help them pull it off.

Researchers found that the front portion of a cat’s spine is much more flexible than the lower portion. This lets the upper body twist first, followed by the back half, helping the cat turn upright before reaching the ground.

The movement is called the “air-righting reflex,” and cats can perform it during surprisingly short falls. Their flexible bodies and controlled rotation help protect the head, neck, and spine.

Still, cats aren’t invincible. High falls can cause broken bones, chest injuries, or worse, even when they land feet-first.

So while your cat’s midair skills are remarkable, secure windows, balconies, and screens are still the smartest safety plan.
