The Stray Cat A Soldier Refused To Leave Behind
Pluto was just another stray cat when he first crossed paths with U.S. Army Warrant Officer CW2 Richard DeJesus during a deployment in Poland. At the time, the cat seemed healthy enough, and their brief encounters felt ordinary.
Months later, Pluto returned. This time, he was thin, injured, and clearly struggling. DeJesus began caring for him, and the bond formed quickly. Pluto would curl up beside him while he studied, turning quiet moments into something meaningful.
When deployment ended, leaving Pluto behind wasn’t an option. Bringing an international stray cat home, however, came with challenges. With help from local residents and SPCA International’s Patriot Pets program, Pluto received the medical care and paperwork needed to travel.
After a long journey, Pluto arrived safely in El Paso. Now settled in with DeJesus and his family, he’s adjusting to indoor life, sleeping nearby and rarely leaving his person’s side.

What To Do When Cat Vet Care Is Too Expensive
Veterinary care can get expensive fast, especially when illness or injury comes without warning. From emergency visits to routine care, costs can feel overwhelming for many cat owners. The good news is that skipping care is not the only option.
Some veterinary clinics offer wellness plans that spread preventive costs into monthly payments. Others work with third-party services that allow bills to be paid over time. Low-cost clinics, nonprofit shelters, and community veterinary programs may also provide discounted or free services, including vaccines and spay or neuter surgeries.
Online fundraising platforms can help cover unexpected emergencies, and some breeders or shelters may offer guidance or support. While pet insurance won’t help with existing conditions, it can be a helpful tool for future care.
Asking questions and exploring resources can make a stressful situation feel more manageable. Help is often closer than it seems.

Emergency Cat Surgeries Can Cost $10K+
80% of pets will have some sort of medical emergency in their lifetime. With costs continuing to climb, many cat owners are wondering how they can afford a surgery in case of an emergency.
Some cat owners have separate savings accounts ready to cover these extreme costs, but now there is an even better solution with the Nibbles Pet Rewards Credit Card.
The card comes with free pet insurance for one eligible pet, so your kitty cat can be covered, and you get 3x rewards at the vet, at pet stores, and on pet services.
Save hundreds annually on premiums alone and potentially thousands in case of an emergency. All this with the no annual fee Nibbles Credit Card.
Nibbles is not a bank. The Nibbles card is issued by Lead Bank. Fees and T&C apply. Eligibility rules apply.
Thank you to Nibbles for sponsoring Daily Purr.

Long Before Laptops, Cats Ruled the Desk
Cats sitting on keyboards may feel like a modern annoyance, but history tells a much older story. An exhibition at The Walters Art Museum highlights how cats have been inserting themselves into human workspaces for centuries.
The collection features medieval manuscripts filled with cat illustrations, playful marginal drawings, and even real paw prints left behind by curious cats walking across freshly inked pages. These accidental marks offer rare insight into how closely cats lived alongside scribes, scholars, and bookkeepers.
In the Middle Ages, cats were valued for protecting books and food stores from rodents. Over time, they also became familiar companions, present during long hours of writing and copying texts. The exhibit shows that cats were equal parts helpful and distracting, a role they continue to play today.
Turns out, cats have always believed every desk belongs to them.
