If Cats Made New Year’s Resolutions

Humans welcome the New Year with big plans and fresh goals. Cats? They have very different plans.

If cats made resolutions, most would focus on comfort, control, and keeping humans properly trained. This year’s top goals likely include pretending not to hear their name, demanding food five minutes earlier than usual, and sitting directly on laptops during important moments.

Many cats would resolve to tolerate the carrier a little longer (but only a little), perfect their ā€œemergency meowā€ for treats, and forgive humans for changing the litter brand without permission. Others might vow to use the scratching post more often, assuming it’s placed exactly where the couch used to be.

And of course, no feline resolution list would be complete without promising more naps, better sunbeam timing, and just enough cuddling to remind everyone who runs the house.

Whether or not they stick to their goals is another story. But one resolution cats never break? Making every day revolve around them. And honestly, they’re very good at it.

An Easy Resolution to Help Your Cat

ā€œNew Year, New Meā€ sounds great until your cat decides to test gravity from the top of the bookshelf. This new year, be prepared for any way your cat tries to reinvent themselves.

With free accident and illness coverage included in the Nibbles pet rewards credit card, you can be ready for anything. You also get 3x rewards back at the vet and at pet stores, so you can make next year the best yet with extra treats and more cat towers in their future.

Nibbles is not a bank. The Nibbles card is issued by Lead Bank. Fees and T&C apply. Eligibility rules apply.

Meet Cats of the Day: Missy and Bootsy

Meet Missy and Bootsy, an inseparable sibling pair who have been brightening their home for eight years. These half-Ragdoll, half-Siamese littermates were adopted together and have been a daily joy ever since. With their white ā€œmittens,ā€ fluffy collars and bibs, and ultra-soft fur, they look as sweet as they are.

Mostly indoor cats, Missy and Bootsy enjoy a little supervised outdoor time when the weather allows. Bootsy likes to imagine himself as a mighty hunter, with Missy occasionally tagging along, but cozy indoor life suits them just fine (especially during Minnesota winters). Whether lounging together or watching the world go by, these two do everything as a team.

The Real Reason Cats Pounce

A cat’s surprise pounce can feel personal, but it’s rarely meant that way. Most of the time, it’s a mix of instinct, play, and communication showing up at inconvenient moments.

For kittens, pouncing is part of growing up. Chasing moving feet or hands helps them practice coordination and learn how their bodies work, even if it leaves humans startled.

Adult cats often pounce out of boredom or affection. Humans are familiar, responsive, and always nearby, which makes them an appealing play target when daily stimulation runs low.

Sometimes pouncing is a sign that a cat has had enough. Twitching skin, flicking tails, or turned ears often come before a sudden swipe, especially during long petting sessions. Less often, fear is the cause. A startled or cornered cat may pounce defensively, which is different from playful behavior and worth addressing.

Pouncing getting out of hand? Regular play, enrichment toys, and respecting boundaries usually help keep surprise attacks to a minimum.
