What makes a cat “odd”? At The Odd Cat Sanctuary, it simply means different. Founded in 2015 by veterinary technician Tara Kawczynski, the rescue focuses on cats who are often overlooked—those with medical needs, physical differences, or unique personalities.

Over the years, the sanctuary has placed cats missing limbs or eyes, blind cats, seniors, and semi-feral cats into loving homes. The mission is simple: expand the definition of adoptable. When expectations shift, more lives are saved.

One foster volunteer shared the story of Phoebe, a cat with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a neurological condition that causes wobbling and balance issues. It isn’t painful or progressive. Phoebe may fall, but she gets back up, plays, climbs, and purrs like any other cat.

The biggest challenge now is finding fosters willing to take a chance on special needs cats. The rescue emphasizes that most care can be taught, and support is always available. For many adopters, saying yes to an “odd” cat turns out to be the most rewarding decision of all.

Indoor cats may be safe inside, but their instincts are still wired for the outdoors. Cat grass adds sensory stimulation through scent, texture, and movement, encouraging sniffing, nibbling, and light foraging behaviors that break up long indoor days.
