A group of rescue cats in Chicago has become an unlikely stage sensation. Known as the Rock Cats, the feline performers are part of a touring show that blends circus-style tricks with a playful “rock band” theme.

The show features a rotating group of about 13 cats, many of them former strays or rescues. During performances, the cats walk high wires, roll barrels, skateboard, leap between platforms, and even “play” miniature instruments as part of the band.

The act was created by animal trainer Samantha Martin, who originally trained other animals before realizing cat lovers might enjoy seeing cats take center stage. Early performances were unpredictable, but audiences quickly embraced the show’s mix of skill and chaotic feline personality.

Like most cats, the performers don’t always follow the script. Sometimes a cat pauses mid-act to groom or wander around the stage, which often gets just as many laughs as the planned tricks. Even with the occasional feline improvisation, the Rock Cats continue drawing crowds who enjoy seeing rescue cats shine in the spotlight.

Cats spend a large portion of their lives sleeping, often up to 16 hours a day. During those long naps, many cat owners notice twitching whiskers, fluttering eyelids, or paws that seem to move as if chasing something. These movements have led scientists to believe that cats likely dream while they sleep.

Like humans, cats experience different sleep stages, including REM sleep (rapid eye movement). This stage is when the brain is most active during sleep and when dreaming typically occurs. Studies of mammal sleep cycles suggest that animals, including cats, experience brain activity during REM that is similar to what occurs when they are awake.

Cats actually enter REM sleep more frequently than humans, usually about every 25 minutes. These shorter but frequent REM cycles mean cats may dream even during short naps.

Researchers can’t know exactly what cats dream about, but experts believe their dreams may reflect daily experiences. A twitching paw could be linked to chasing toys, watching birds outside the window, or other activities that fill a cat’s day.
