What to Know About Kitten Season

Every spring and summer, animal shelters across the U.S. brace for kitten season. As the weather warms, cats give birth in big numbers, often outdoors, and many kittens need urgent care. Some, like Strawberry and Meatball, are found in parking lots or garages before landing in rescue.

Young kittens often require round-the-clock feeding and warmth, which many shelters can’t provide. That’s where foster volunteers come in. Groups like LIC Feral Feeders in Queens are saving lives by bottle-feeding newborn kittens like Macaroni and Rigatoni until they’re strong enough for adoption.

Fostering may sound overwhelming, but most shelters cover supplies and offer support. All it takes is time and a little love. Even better, many fosters end up adopting their kittens, a “failure” that shelters actually celebrate!

This season, shelters are urging more people to try fostering, even just once. The need is real, and the reward is unforgettable.

Meet Cat of the Day, Cocoa

Meet Cocoa, an 18-year-old queen with a very particular morning routine. She gently bops her human, Irene, on the face, paw to cheek or nose, until breakfast service begins. No alarm clock necessary.

Cocoa’s tastes are just as refined as her wake-up technique. She’s the first finicky cat Irene’s ever had, which means her menu is on constant rotation to keep things exciting. If she loses interest in a food, it gets cycled out and reintroduced later.

At 18, Cocoa knows exactly what she wants and isn’t shy about asking for it. And honestly? She’s earned it.

Cat Fascinated with the Sink? Here’s Why

Ever catch your cat licking the faucet or pawing at the sink? They’re not just being quirky; there are real reasons cats are drawn to running water. According to veterinarian Dr. Joanna Woodnutt, it may come down to instinct, comfort, and even fun.

First, running water is likely fresher and safer than still water. In the wild, stagnant puddles could mean bacteria or predators. A moving stream? Much less risky. Cats may still carry this preference today, especially since they’re not always great about drinking enough water in general.

Second, their whiskers might play a role. Some cats dislike deep bowls that press on their whiskers, making water fountains or faucets more appealing. Others are just mesmerized by motion. Light bouncing off water, trickling sounds, and ripples can all capture their attention.

And finally, it might just be fun. For playful cats, swatting at a stream of water is enriching and entertaining. And if it also encourages them to hydrate? That’s a win for everyone.
