High-Speed Cat Herding

Ever wondered what it's like to actually herd cats? Earl Anema, a gravel cyclist from Denver, found out the hard way during the FoCo Fondo race in Fort Collins, Colorado. As he was speeding down the track, he encountered a woman frantically waving with a handful of kittens in tow. Turns out, these tiny furballs had decided to turn the race into a feline obstacle course, darting into the path of hundreds of cyclists. Earl, being a cat lover and now an accidental kitten herder, jumped into action to help corral the fluffballs and keep them safe.

As if herding cats wasn’t enough, one particular kitten had its eyes set on Earl. This little black and white ball of fluff kept escaping from everyone else’s arms and snuggling into Earl’s jersey like it had found its personal cozy nest. After a few rounds of kitty hide-and-seek, the kitten made itself at home right inside Earl’s jersey, meowing contentedly. By the end of the rescue mission, Earl not only managed to finish the race with a respectable time but also scored the best finisher swag ever — a new feline friend named Fondo.

Rescuing Kittens 101

Rescuing kittens might sound like a straightforward job, but it’s a bit more complicated than just finding a furry bundle and giving it a snack. First off, you need to be sure those kittens are truly abandoned before you swoop in like a cat-saving superhero. If they’re plump, clean, and snoozing away, they probably have a mom nearby who’s just shy of an audience. But if the kittens are dirty or howling for their next meal, then it’s time for a rescue mission. If the mom cat is friendly, let her handle the kittens until they’re a bit older, but if she’s a feral feline, grab the little ones around 4 weeks before they turn into the ultimate untamable kittens.

Once you’ve got your rescue mission underway, warming up those cold kittens is crucial. No kitten should be fed while shivering like a leaf in a windstorm. Instead, wrap them in a cozy blanket with a heating pad on low or a warm water bottle to get them toasty. And forget the milk carton; it’s not kitten-approved. Use proper kitten formula to ensure your adorable rescue gets all the nutrition they need.

For the health of both you and the kittens, be sure to keep everything squeaky clean. Sterilize bottles and your hands like you’re prepping for a surgery. And if you plan to foster these kittens, reaching out to local shelters for guidance and potential foster moms can make all the difference. After all, a warm, well-fed kitten with the right care will grow into a healthy and happy cat.
