The Law That Could Protect Bodega Cats
Bodegas in New York are more than just corner stores, they’re cultural landmarks. And for many, the heartbeat of the bodega is the cat. Known for keeping the premises free of rats, these feline residents have become beloved fixtures. But as cute as they are, their role is more critical than most realize.
In 2020, photographer Dan Rimada started documenting these iconic cats and soon discovered a legal challenge. Under New York’s health codes, cats in food establishments are a violation, one that could result in fines. Despite this, many bodega owners accept the small fine as the price of preventing a much bigger issue: rats.
Rimada, realizing the vital work these cats do, has rallied to get them recognized as service animals, aiming for legal protections through proposed state bills. If successful, these laws would ensure proper care for bodega cats while allowing them to continue their essential work.
The fight continues, but Rimada is determined: as long as New York has bodegas, it will have its cats.

Breed Spotlight: German Rex
If you're looking for a cat that’s as playful as it is intelligent, the German Rex might just be your perfect match. Known as the “Einstein” of the cat world, these kitties are incredibly smart and easily trainable. They’re so clever that they often figure out how to open cabinets or retrieve toys, leaving their owners both amused and amazed.
The German Rex, with its soft, curly coat, isn’t just a beauty; it’s also a lover of human companionship. These cats thrive on attention, affection, and interactive play. They’ll eagerly chase feather wands or engage in puzzle games to keep their sharp minds active.
Though small in size, they have long, slender legs that give them a graceful, athletic appearance. The German Rex is a rare breed, with only a few breeders specializing in it, but for those lucky enough to share their homes with one, they’re a unique and joyful addition.

The Myth of Nine Lives
The age-old myth that cats have nine lives has fascinated us for centuries. While it's fun to think of cats as invincible creatures capable of surviving any misadventure, the reality is a bit more grounded. Cats don't have multiple lives, but they do have remarkable survival instincts that help them navigate risky situations.
One of these abilities is their "righting reflex," which allows them to instinctively adjust their bodies to land on their feet after a fall. This fascinating trait, though impressive, isn't foolproof. While cats may survive many tumbles, they can still suffer injuries from falls, and serious accidents do occur.
On average, indoor cats live 12 to 15 years, while outdoor cats face much shorter lifespans due to the dangers of their environment. Genetics, health, and veterinary care all play a crucial role in a cat's longevity, with the oldest cat on record living to 38 years.
The key to a long, happy life? Regular vet visits, environmental stimulation, and a safe, enriched home where your cat can thrive. Although cats don’t have nine lives, with the right care, they can certainly make the most of the one life they have.
