Does Your Cat Confuse You With Their Mom?

Ever feel like your cat treats you like more than just the person who fills their food bowl? You’re not imagining it. A study out of Oregon State University found that cats show the same attachment styles to their humans as babies do to their moms. That means trust, closeness, and even comfort-seeking are all part of the relationship.

But let’s clear something up: your cat doesn’t literally think you’re their mom. “Cats are smarter than that,” says feline behaviorist Kristiina Wilson. While they might not mistake us for their biological mothers, the bond is still deep. Think best friend, not birth parent.

Still, there’s something special about how they interact with us. When they knead your lap, curl up nearby, or follow you from room to room, it’s their version of showing love and attachment.

So no, they’re not confusing you with their mother. But they do see you as someone safe, familiar, and meaningful. Which, when you think about it, might be even better.

Cat of the Day, Boots

A Daily Purr reader shares Boots! She’s an adorable cat who loves sunbathing, playing with her mouse toy, and minnows. Boots is all about comfort and good lighting, especially when there’s a patch of sunlight nearby.

New Data Shows Cats Rule Gen Z Finances

It’s no secret that cats are part of the family—but for many younger adults, they’re also part of the decision-making team. A new survey found that most millennial and Gen Z pet parents base their spending habits, travel plans, and home setups around their animals.

In a poll of 400 respondents, 90 percent said having a pet was one of the most important parts of their lives. That love translates into action—people are picking where to live based on cat-friendly layouts, furnishing their homes with pets in mind, and even skipping vacations that would be stressful for their feline companions.

For many, getting a pet marked their first step into “adulthood,” and they’re committed to doing it right. That means healthy food, plenty of enrichment, and yes—even building dedicated rooms for their cats.

In a world full of choices, more people are putting cats at the center. And it turns out, they’re pretty great life planners.
