A study from UC Davis suggests that cat parents who score higher on anxiety are also more affectionate and trusting toward their cats.

Researchers surveyed over 1,200 cat owners, asking about their emotions, attachment styles, and how they viewed their relationship with their cat. People with anxious attachment—those who seek reassurance—tended to feel more connected and devoted to their cats. They also trusted their cats more than those who were less emotionally expressive.

Interestingly, while anxiety strengthened trust, emotions like anger or depression could weaken it. Those who reported feeling unworthy of their cat’s love were more likely to also report symptoms of depression—something researchers say shows how mental health shapes all kinds of relationships, not just human ones.
