Cats Want These 5 Things in Their Litter

Cats can be picky about a lot of things, and litter is one of them. Here are five things that cats are looking for when it comes to doing their business:

  1. A Soft Texture: Cats prefer litter that is soft on their paws and more closely resembles natural dirt or sand - what they would use naturally outdoors.

  2. Low Dust and Tracking: Dusty litter can irritate a cat’s nose and lungs. A low-dust cat litter is gentler. Cats also love to keep things neat and clean (even if sometimes it doesn’t seem that way!) - a low tracking litter reduces scatter.

  3. Odor-Controlling and Unscented: Cats have sensitive noses and dislike artificial fragrances. They often prefer unscented litter that absorbs odors naturally rather than covering them up.

  4. Good Clumping and Absorption: Fast-clumping litter makes it easier for us to scoop waste and control odor, leaving the remaining litter cleaner for longer and our cats happy.

  5. Natural Ingredients: Cats may accidentally ingest litter when grooming. Natural, non-toxic materials like plant-based options can be safer.

Cats (and Humans) Love This New Litter

Tailfeather is an eco-friendly, soft cat litter made from coconuts and cassava.

Why coconut? Coconut makes for a soft, luxurious texture that cats love and is 70% lighter than traditional litter, but also doesn't track and bounce out of the box. The husk of the coconut absorbs liquid up to 9 times its weight for excellent absorption and odor control.

Tailfeather clumps like traditional cat litter for easy scooping and removal, keeping the remaining litter fresh and clean.

Unlike traditional litter that is non-renewable and ends up in landfills, Tailfeather is plant-based, biodegradable, and has no artificial fragrances. The packaging is also recyclable and plastic-free.

Tailfeather is delivered conveniently to your door, and each package lasts for 8 weeks, double the amount of other litters.

Science Says Your Cat Might Be Just Like You

If your cat seems to match your energy—lounging when you’re relaxed or playfully following you around the house—you’re not imagining things. Research suggests that cats mirror their owners’ behavior and even pick up on their personality traits.

A 2019 study found that friendly, engaged owners were more likely to have social, affectionate cats. Those who spent time playing and interacting with their cats often had pets who were more confident and curious. Just like a child learning from their parent, cats observe how we move through the world and respond accordingly.

This bond goes beyond behavior. Studies also show that cats form deep attachments to their humans, using them as a source of comfort and security. Whether it’s through slow blinks, head bumps, or curling up next to you, your cat is always learning from you—and showing love in their own way.

So the next time your cat curls up in your favorite chair or follows your routine, take it as a compliment. They trust you, they learn from you, and in their own way, they just might be a little bit like you.

Cat of the Day, Autumn Love

Daily Purr reader Kelsey shares the heartwarming story of Autumn Love, a determined tortie who found her way home. When Kelsey first met her, Autumn Love was in a foster home raising kittens, but the timing wasn’t right for adoption. Six weeks later, Kelsey tracked her down at a cat café—her kittens had found homes, but she was still waiting.

With a little catnip as encouragement, Autumn Love hopped right into the carrier, as if she knew she had finally found her person. Since that day, they’ve been inseparable, proving that some cats are just meant to be with us.

Thanks, Kelsey, for sharing Autumn Love’s special journey! Want to see your cat featured as the Daily Purr Cat of the Day? Send in a photo and some fun facts about your kitty—they might be next!
