🐈 The litter box hack you’ll wish you tried sooner

Monday 3/31 - Sponsored by Whisker: Tips for picking the right litter box for your cat, cat of the day, and a shelter cat holds visitor's hand

"Love from a cat comes slowly, quietly—and all at once."

Happy Monday:

Why is my cat…

Why is my cat staring at the wall?

(scroll to the bottom to find the answer!)

How to Choose a Litter Box Your Cat Actually Likes

If your cat’s been skipping the box or only using it reluctantly, the box itself might be the problem. It's one of those small things that can quietly make a big difference in your cat’s behavior, comfort, and health.

Most cats want the same thing we do—space and privacy. Ideally, the box should be at least 1.5 times your cat’s body length so they can comfortably turn around and dig. A high-sided box helps keep litter from scattering, while a lower entry point makes it easier for older cats or kittens to get in.

And then there's this: how many boxes do you really need? The general rule—one per cat, plus one extra—might feel excessive, but it can reduce stress, prevent accidents, and give cats options, which they appreciate more than we think.

It’s a simple thing to overlook, but once you find the setup your cat truly likes, you may notice a shift—more ease, fewer messes, and maybe even a little more trust. Sometimes, it’s the least glamorous upgrades that make the biggest difference.

Cat of the Day, Stirling

Daily Purr reader Donna introduces us to Stirling, her gorgeous rescue with a spirit as strong as his name. Because of pins in his right leg, Stirling can’t quite sit like other cats—but that’s the only thing holding him back.

From his perch high atop a 6-foot cat tree (his favorite nap spot), Stirling keeps a watchful eye over his kingdom. And when he’s not up there? He’s happily curled up beside Donna, right where he belongs.

Thanks, Donna, for sharing Stirling’s resilience and charm! Want to see your cat featured as the Daily Purr Cat of the Day? Send in a photo and some fun facts about your kitty—they might be next!

The Cat Who Chose His Human

After losing his cat Sticky, Chuck Hawley wasn’t looking to adopt again anytime soon. But a few days later, he found himself walking into the Oregon Humane Society—just to be around animals. He didn’t expect much. The kittens were already adopted. He nearly left without seeing the others.

Then, as he walked past the older cats, a paw reached out through the side of a cage and touched his arm. It just stayed there, like it was waiting. When he pulled back the tarp, he saw Allen—a calm cat with a look that reminded him of Sticky, but with a presence all his own.

Hawley hadn’t planned to adopt, but he knew in that moment he wasn’t going home alone. Allen has since settled in like he’s always been there. He even found Sticky’s old favorite spots around the house without being shown.

Hawley says Allen’s companionship has helped him move through grief in a way nothing else could. Sometimes, the right cat finds you—especially when you need it most.
