Think Cats Like Being Alone? Think Again

Cats have long been labeled as independent, but experts say this stereotype isn’t entirely accurate. While cats don’t express affection the way dogs do, many thrive with companionship—whether from other cats, humans, or even other pets.

Kittens go through a key socialization window between two and eight weeks old. During this time, exposure to people, other animals, and household noises helps shape their confidence. Without it, they may develop “single kitten syndrome,” leading to biting, aggression, or overdependence.

Adult cats also benefit from social connections. Many prefer having a feline friend, while others bond closely with their humans. A well-socialized cat is often more relaxed, playful, and engaged. However, some cats are naturally more solitary—what matters is recognizing your cat’s unique needs.

If you're adopting, consider bringing home two kittens or pairing a solo cat with a compatible companion. And if your cat prefers being the only pet, enrichment activities can keep them happy. Does your cat enjoy company, or are they a true loner?

Cat of the Day, Kitty

Daily Purr reader Laura shares the incredible story of Kitty, a resilient feline from Pacific Palisades. After the devastating fires of January 7th, her home was the only one left standing on her block. While she didn’t lose her house, she lost her familiar neighborhood, and it will be a while before she can return.

Thankfully, Kitty’s journey led her to a welcoming temporary home with her owner’s generous friend. With extra space to explore and more affection than ever, she’s adjusting well to her new life.

While her humans are still finding their footing, one thing is clear—Kitty has already mastered hers. Thanks, Laura, for sharing Kitty’s story!
