The Story Behind Britain’s “Chief Mouser”

Larry, the well-known cat living at 10 Downing Street (the official residence of the U.K. prime minister) recently marked 15 years in the role. The tabby-and-white cat was adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, a London rescue, in 2011 during the administration of Prime Minister David Cameron.

Larry was originally brought in to help control rodents around the historic government building and was given the tongue-in-cheek title “Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office.” Since then, he has lived through the terms of six prime ministers and become one of the most recognizable residents of the address.

Over the years, Larry has also shared the building with pets belonging to different prime ministers. One of his most famous rivalries was with Palmerston, a cat from the nearby U.K. Foreign Office, with the two occasionally getting into scuffles.

Despite rumors about his health circulating online in recent years, Larry remains active and widely loved by the public. At one point ahead of the U.K.’s 2024 election, opinion polls even showed the Downing Street cat with higher favorability ratings than several political leaders.

Meet Cat of the Day, Itsy Bitsy

Meet Itsy Bitsy, Brenda’s tuxedo girl with a strong independent streak. Brenda says she was left on the doorstep as a tiny kitten and grew into a semi-feral sweetheart who mostly prefers the great outdoors.

When the weather turns rainy or cold, or when the smell of something good cooking drifts outside, Itsy Bitsy happily comes in to spend the night. She also makes regular stops for brushing sessions and treats.

Her favorite way to show love? Wrapping herself around Brenda’s ankles when she comes by to say hello.

Breed Spotlight: Ussuri

The Ussuri cat is one of the rarest cat breeds in the world. Originating in the Amur River region of Russia, these striking cats are rarely seen even in their home country. Their wild appearance and powerful build reflect their unusual origins.

Researchers believe the breed may have developed naturally when Amur forest cats or Amur leopard cats bred with domestic cats in the region. Because of their hybrid background, Ussuri cats tend to be highly athletic and independent. They typically weigh 11–15 pounds and can live 12–15 years.

Unlike many companion cats, Ussuris are not known for being lap cats. They have a strong hunting instinct and thrive in environments where they can climb, run, and explore, such as homes with large outdoor enclosures or catios.

Despite their independent streak, Ussuri cats can form close bonds with people. Many develop a strong attachment to one person in the household while still keeping their energetic, adventurous personality.
