Surprising Things That Might Annoy Your Cat

You might think you're being loving, but to your cat, some everyday behaviors can feel downright annoying. Even something as small as spritzing perfume or scooping them up for a cuddle might cross a line.

According to behaviorists and vets, the #1 offender? A dirty litter box. Skipping a day of scooping might not seem like a big deal to you, but it’s a dealbreaker for most cats. Following close behind is picking them up too often or petting sensitive areas like their tail or belly without consent.

Cats also dislike loud noises, sudden movements, or being interrupted while napping. Trying to play when they’re curled up is like someone waking you from a nap with a Nerf gun. Not ideal.

Reading their body language—ears back, tail flicks, walking away—is the key to getting it right. With cats, respect is love.

What Really Makes Orange Cats Orange

Ever wondered why some cats are a perfect shade of orange? Scientists have finally figured it out—and it’s not as simple as one “orange gene.”

New research shows that orange fur comes from two things: a tiny missing piece on a cat’s X chromosome and a boost in a gene called Arhgap36. Together, they cause color cells in the cat’s body to turn orange instead of black or brown.

Male cats only have one X chromosome, so they usually end up fully orange if they inherit the change. Female cats have two Xs, so they often show a mix, like the patchy fur in calicos and tortoiseshells.

Even more intriguing? Arhgap36 also shows up in the brain. That might help explain why orange cats have a reputation for being chaotic little comedians.

Breed Spotlight: Selkirk Rex Longhair

With their teddy bear looks and laid-back charm, Selkirk Rex Longhairs are among the most affectionate cats you’ll meet. They’re best known for their curly coats—yes, even the whiskers curl—and their love of people. These cats thrive on companionship and don’t love being alone for long stretches.

The breed began with one kitten in Montana in 1987, whose unique coat caught the eye of a breeder. That kitten, Miss DiPesto, became the foundation for all Selkirk Rexes today. Longhaired versions have a fluffier look but share the same easygoing nature.

They’re not hyperactive, but they do enjoy playtime—especially with you. Wand toys and gentle games are favorites. Just be prepared for regular brushing to keep those curls tangle-free.

While some cats prefer solitude, Selkirk Rexes prefer snuggling next to your keyboard or hanging out while you fold laundry. They’re sweet, social, and basically built for cozier lives.
