Stray Cats Get a Custom DIY Litter Palace

When feeding stray cats, one TikTok creator noticed a big problem: her small litter boxes weren’t cutting it. The cats were sneaking off into a neighbor’s garden instead. Her solution? Build a custom outdoor litter box from scratch.

She hauled wood across the water to her island home, built a sturdy frame, and added thoughtful details: a sliding roof for easy cleaning, mesh windows for airflow, and even a cat-sized porch with tiny stairs and railing. To finish it off, she lined the base with 200 pounds of litter, leaving space in the attic to store extra.

The strays quickly approved, climbing inside as soon as the project was finished. Fans online praised the colorful handmade roof and called the box a “cat mansion.” With plenty of other cozy cat houses already dotting the yard, followers are now suggesting the next big build: a full playground just for the island’s strays.

Feral Cat Care 101

Feral cats live outdoors with little human contact and often gather in colonies near homes or businesses. Without help, they face health risks, food shortages, and fast-growing populations.

One of the most important steps you can take is supporting trap-neuter-return (TNR). This prevents overpopulation while allowing cats to live out their natural lives. Local rescues and animal welfare groups often provide humane traps and low-cost spay/neuter services.

You can also make daily life easier by providing food at set times and keeping fresh water available year-round. In colder months, insulated shelters with straw bedding can protect them from harsh weather.

Caretakers who monitor colonies and step in when cats are sick or injured help entire groups stay healthier. With these efforts, feral cats can live longer, safer lives while peacefully coexisting in the community.

Vet Bills Won’t Break the Bank If You Have the Right Insurance

Surprise vet bills can certainly bite. But fear not, pet insurance can be your lifeline. Some plans cover major surgeries — which can cost up to $7,000 — so you can afford the best care for your pet. Check out our top-rated pet insurance providers, with some plans offering coverage for just $1 a day, multi-pet coverage, and reimbursement options of up to 90%. With the right coverage, you could keep your pet (and your wallet) happy.
