Scientists Need Your Cat Videos

In a daring new research initiative, scientists at the University of California, Davis, are seeking brave souls for a high-stakes experiment: playing with their cats. The mission? To delve into the mysteries of feline playtime and interaction. Participants will be asked to capture a two-minute video of their usual cat play routine, followed by using a standardized toy in a specific way. Not only will you contribute to the scientific understanding of our whiskered friends, but you might also snag a $50 gift card—because saving the world one cat toy at a time deserves a reward.

Dr. Hee Jin Chung, a PhD student leading the charge, hopes to clear up some of the misconceptions about our whiskered friends. She points out that cats are often misunderstood, and this research aims to shed light on their behavior. By participating, volunteers will not only contribute to science but also help demystify the quirky behaviors of our feline companions. So, if you’ve ever thought about getting paid to play with your cat, now’s your chance to be a scientific hero and win some cool rewards.

Cute Calico Cat Cookies

Get ready to bake up a batch of calico cat cookies that are purr-fectly irresistible—just don’t let your cat catch you. These treats are for human taste buds only.

Cookie Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 cup vegetable oil

  • 1 cup unsalted butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 4 1/2 cups flour

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

  • 1 teaspoon almond extract

  • Orange, brown and black food coloring

  • 1 additional cup of sugar for dipping the glass

Decorating Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of white chocolate chips or vanilla candy melts

  • Pink candy melts

  • Black decorator candy balls

  • Black food coloring marker

Instructions:

  1. Cream together the butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl. Add the eggs and oil.

  2. Slowly add the dry ingredients while mixing. Add the vanilla and almond extract.

  3. Divide the dough into three portions in separate bowls. Two portions should be smaller than the third portion.

  4. Add orange and brown food coloring to one of the smaller portions. Add black food coloring to the other small portion. Leave the largest portion uncolored.

  5. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

  6. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  7. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  8. Remove the dough from the refrigerator.

  9. Roll the dough into 1 ½” balls. Take bits of brown and black dough and stick them to the outside of each ball. Roll each ball until smooth and place on the prepared baking sheet. Flatten each ball with a drinking glass, dipping the glass into sugar before each press.

  10. Bake the cookies for 12 minutes.

  11. After taking the cookies out of the oven, while they’re still warm, use a 2-inch round cookie cutter to cut out a piece of the top of each cookie to create the cats’ ears.

  12. Melt about a cup of white chocolate chips or candy melts in the microwave and pour into a squeeze bottle.

  13. Squeeze two small circles onto each cookie to create the eyes. While the chocolate is still soft, press a black candy ball into each white circle.

  14. Cut hearts out of the pink candy melts to create the noses. They can be attached to the cookies with a drop of white chocolate.

  15. Use the black food coloring pen to add whiskers.

  16. Enjoy your tasty calico cat cookies and be sure to share them with your favorite humans.

Why We Love Cats

Cats have cemented their place as one of the most adored pets in the U.S., with around 46.5 million households cherishing at least one feline friend. It's no wonder—these furry charmers are not only cute and cuddly but also offer a delightful mix of low-maintenance companionship and irresistible playfulness. From their large, baby-like eyes to their playful antics, cats seem designed to capture our hearts and keep us hooked on their adorable quirks.

But it’s not just about their irresistible cuteness. Cats also excel at being low-maintenance companions. After all, who wouldn’t love a pet that takes care of itself, uses a litter box, and requires zero daily walks? They’re basically tiny, furry roommates who clean themselves and occasionally grace us with their company. And don’t forget their pest-control prowess; just their mere presence can send rodents running for the hills.

Cats are also excellent for your mental and physical health. Their purrs soothe your soul and could even lower your blood pressure. Add to that their loyalty, quiet demeanor, and talent for being endlessly entertaining, and it’s clear why we adore them so much. Whether they’re climbing up cat trees, cuddling up for a nap, or providing endless amusement, cats prove time and again that they’re the ultimate companions.
