Cats, Coffee, and Colombian Treats

Get a Gato is more than just your average coffee shop—it's a feline-filled paradise. Located in Philadelphia, this quirky spot serves up coffee and Colombian pastries up front, while in the back, a non-profit cat lounge is teeming with adoptable kitties from the local Fishtails rescue. Owner Jackie Starker was inspired by Japan’s famous cat cafes and decided to mix the cozy, cat-filled atmosphere with the heart of a shelter.

From specialty drinks to Colombian pastelillos, you can enjoy a snack while lounging in the uber-popular cat window, where you get a front-row seat to all the feline shenanigans. If that’s not enough, there’s even cat yoga, trivia nights, and romantic date night experiences. Whether you’re looking to adopt or just need a few hours of furry therapy, Get a Gato is purr-fect for all your coffee and cat needs, with all proceeds going to the care of the adorable residents.

The Kurilian Bobtail

The Kurilian Bobtail might look like it just wandered out of a rugged wilderness with its little pom-pom tail and muscular build, but don’t let that fool you. Beneath that wild exterior is a feline softie who’s great at snuggling. These cats have a thick double coat, ideal for weathering both the elements and your lap. Known for their playful antics and sharp intelligence, they’ll happily keep you on your toes—especially when they decide it’s time for you to fetch their toys. Good with families, this is one cat that might even try to outsmart you, but at least they’ll do it while looking adorable.

The history of the Kurilian Bobtail is as adventurous as their wild look. Hailing from the remote Kuril Islands, these cats lived the wildlife, fishing for their meals and earning respect from Russian fishermen for their impressive hunting skills. These independent little daredevils eventually decided that life indoors could be just as thrilling, strutting their stuff into homes and cat shows across Europe. Now, they’ve traded in their rugged hunting boots for cozy cat beds, but their adventurous spirit is still very much alive.

This New Toilet Paper Just Might Save the Planet

Every 24 hours, 27,000 trees are cut down to make toilet paper. To us, that feels like way too many — and Honeycomb agrees. That’s why this small, female-founded brand created luxury, 3-ply toilet tissue made from bamboo. It feels just like regular high-end toilet paper but doesn’t harm trees.

So why bamboo? It’s the fastest-growing plant in the world — growing 100 times faster than the average tree — which means thousands of rolls can be produced in the time it takes for a single tree to grow back.

Even better? Code PURR30 will give new customers 30% off their first order for the next 24 hours.

Thank you to Honeycomb for sponsoring Daily Purr.

Do Cat Cafes Help Cats Get Adopted?

Cat cafĂ©s aren’t just about sipping lattes while watching whiskers twitch—they're actually a secret weapon for getting cats adopted. While the original cat cafĂ©s in Asia had permanent feline residents, many North American versions have partnered with local shelters to feature adoptable cats. These cafĂ©s give cats the chance to show off their charm in a relaxed, home-like environment, far away from the sometimes stressful atmosphere of a shelter. Visitors get to bond with cats over an extended period, which makes for more thoughtful and successful adoptions. It’s like speed dating, but with less awkward conversation and more purring.

Unlike traditional shelters, where cats might be too stressed or shy to make a great first impression, cat cafés give them the perfect stage to showcase their true, lovable selves. With over 230 cat cafés across the U.S. as of June 2024, this trend has had a major impact on adoption rates. By offering an environment where both cats and humans feel comfortable, these cafés are making a real difference in finding homes for deserving kitties, one coffee break at a time.

Final Purr

In the time it takes to read today’s edition, an estimated 93 trees will be cut down to meet toilet paper demand. Honeycomb is helping to change that with luxury, three-ply tissue made from sustainable bamboo. It’s biodegradable, plastic-free, and will be delivered straight to you.

New customers can use code PURR30 for 30% off their first shipment. Expires tonight.
