🐈 Do you hate scooping cat litter?

Monday 5/26: Sponsored by Whisker - cat quince, litter box, Calico Sphynx

"You can't teach a cat. A cat teaches you."

Happy Monday:

True or False?

Cats rub their face on furniture to mark their territory.

The Real Reason Cats Love Litter Boxes

Most cats need little to no training to use a litter box—it’s in their DNA. Descended from desert-dwelling wildcats, today’s house cats still carry the instinct to bury waste in sand-like textures to stay hidden from predators.

But that digging behavior serves more than one purpose. Cats have scent glands in their paws, and scratching around in the box also lets them leave a subtle territorial message: this box is mine. In multi-cat households, that’s one reason experts recommend one box per cat, plus an extra.

Your cat’s choice of bathroom location also comes down to comfort and security. Going to the bathroom is a vulnerable moment, and cats instinctively seek quiet, low-traffic spots to do their business in peace.

Cleanliness matters, too. Cats are naturally tidy, and a well-maintained litter box helps them stay that way. If your cat stops using the box, they may be stressed, dislike the litter type, or need a checkup. Sometimes the solution is as simple as trying a new spot—or listening a little more closely.

This Cat’s Quinceañera Took 14 Years to Plan

When Miranda Gonzalez adopted Holly on her 18th birthday, she made a promise: if Holly made it to 15, she’d throw her a quinceañera. Fourteen years later, that dream became reality.

Holly, a laid-back queen with a flair for the dramatic, arrived at the party in a remote-controlled car while bubbles floated around her. She wore a full gown and crown, and 40 guests applauded her entrance. There was a guestbook, an elaborate tiered cake, and even a mariachi band, who were surprised to learn the guest of honor had whiskers.

Gonzalez had spent months planning every detail, with help from friends and family. And yes, Holly seemed to enjoy herself.

The party also supported Almost Home Cat Haven, giving other cats a little more love too. For Gonzalez, it was a celebration of their bond—and Holly’s one-of-a-kind life.

Breed Spotlight: Calico Sphynx

Most people picture the Sphynx as a sleek, solid-colored, hairless cat. But surprise: they come in many colors—including calico. Calico Sphynx cats don’t have fur, but their skin still carries the trademark red, black, and white patches.

The Sphynx breed began in the 1960s in Canada, the result of a natural genetic mutation. The calico version is much rarer, since calico coloring is sex-linked and almost always found in females. Calico males exist, but they’re genetic unicorns.

Underneath the tri-color charm is a cat that’s affectionate, outgoing, and dog-like in loyalty. They love attention and are often happiest when glued to your side—literally. Some even greet their humans at the door.

Just a heads-up: their hairlessness can mean sensitive skin. Calico Sphynx cats are prone to sunburn and need help staying warm. But for the right person, they’re a lovable, one-of-a-kind companion—full of heart and hard to forget.
