Top Kitty Cities

San Diego is officially a purr-fect place to be a cat parent. According to a new report from U.S. News and World Report, the city ranks as one of the most popular spots in the U.S. for cat lovers. With more than 28 million cat-owning households nationwide, San Diego stands proudly among other cat-friendly cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. It seems the laid-back vibe of California's coastline is as appealing to cats as it is to their humans.

What makes these cities such cat havens? The study suggests that apartment life in densely populated areas creates the perfect environment for feline companions. Unlike dogs, cats don’t require daily walks or expansive backyards. They’re perfectly content ruling over their cozy urban kingdoms. Whether lounging on a sunny windowsill or surveying their territory from the top of a bookshelf, city cats have mastered the art of living large in small spaces.

San Diego’s love for felines shines brightly in events like the San Diego Cat Fanciers Cat Show. This annual gathering is a mecca for cat enthusiasts, where attendees can marvel at the grace and agility of their furry friends, pick up some expert tips, and even adopt a new companion. So, if you’re a cat person living in San Diego, rest assured—you’re in good company, surrounded by fellow feline fanatics who know that life is just a little bit better with a cat by your side.

Cozy Round Cat Bed

Why settle for a plain old cat bed when you can craft a cozy throne fit for your feline royalty? With an optional pillow and blanket, your cat might just start requesting breakfast in bed.

Supplies:

  •  1 yard of fleece material

  • An extra 1/2 yard of fabric for pillow and blanket

  • Scissors or a rotary cutter

  • Stuffing

  • Sewing machine

  • Pins

  • Measuring tape

Instructions:

  1. Cut two circular pieces of fabric measuring 22” or larger in diameter. Larger pieces are recommended for heftier felines.

  2. Pin the two pieces of fabric together along the edges. Sew along the edge, but leave a 3-4” opening on one side. Trim away any excess fabric.

  3. Turn the bed inside through the opening left in the side.

  4. Measure 4 inches from the edges of the bed and pin another smaller circle.

  5. Sew along this inner circle, removing pins as you go. Again, leave a 3-4” opening that aligns with the opening in the outer edge.

  6. Stuff the center of the cat bed as much as you want. Sew the opening of the inner circle.

  7. Finishing stuffing the outer circle of the bed. This section should be stuffed a bit more than the center to create a comfortable bolster around the center area.

  8. Fold the edges of the opening inward and pin together. Sew the opening closed.

  9. An extra piece of fabric measuring 14” x 14” can be cut. If using fleece, the edges do not need to be sewn and the blanket can simply be tossed onto the bed.

  10. To sew the bolster pillow, cut a piece of fabric measuring 13” x 12”. Cut two circular pieces of fabric measuring 4” in diameter.

  11. Fold the fabric in half so that it measures 13” x 6”. Pin and sew the two sides together, leaving a 2” opening.

  12. Pin the circular pieces of fabric to the ends of your tube and sew them together.

  13. Turn the pillow right side out through the opening.

  14. Stuff the pillow as full as you’d like it to be.

  15. Fold the edges of the opening inward and pin together. Sew the opening closed.

  16. Introduce your feline friend to his new favorite snoozing spot.

Moving with Cats

Moving into a new home can feel like a thrilling adventure—until you remember you have to convince your cat that it’s not the end of the world. To help your feline friend settle in, it's wise to equip her with an identification collar and microchip updated with your new address, just in case she decides to stage a jailbreak during the move. Once you arrive, create a cozy sanctuary in a quiet room with all her favorite things. Think of it as a mini-vacation for your cat while the rest of the house descends into moving chaos. And yes, frequent visits and cuddle sessions are mandatory.

As your cat adjusts, don’t forget to cat-proof your new home by checking for potential hiding spots or anything inappropriate that might turn into an impromptu snack. If your cat is the nervous type, consider boarding her during the transition so she doesn’t have to deal with the stress of movers and noisy unpacking. When it's finally time to introduce her to the great outdoors, take it slow and steady—no late-night escapades just yet. And if she insists on returning to the old stomping grounds, a little extra love and some well-timed meals might just convince her that the new place isn’t so bad after all.
