The Heartwarming Village for Elderly Cats

Tucked in the English countryside, Shropshire Cat Rescue is home to one of the most heartwarming ideas ever: a retirement village built just for elderly cats. Founded by Marion and Richard Micklewright, the rescue has spent more than two decades saving senior cats that shelters once considered too old to rehome.

Built in 2009, the cat-sized village looks like a tiny town, complete with a storefront, cozy chalets, and even a “Moggies Mansion” where residents mingle. Many cats there are well into their 20s, enjoying their golden years with soft beds, sunny spots, and plenty of affection.

Shropshire isn’t alone. Others, like Florida’s Cats Cradle sanctuary, offer similar havens for senior felines. But Shropshire’s village remains one of the most charming, and it continues to expand through its PURR Project, which will add a nursery, hospital, and education center. For these cats, retirement means love, safety, and endless naps in the sun.

Why Cats Instinctively Use Litter Boxes

Cats have a natural instinct to bury their waste, a behavior seen in both domestic and wild felines. This helps conceal their scent from predators and dominant cats, keeping them safe. Our indoor kitties retain this instinct, making litter box use feel natural to them.

In the wild, cats seek out soft, loose textures like soil or sand to dig and cover their waste, minimizing detection and territorial disputes (even tigers!). They also choose spots that feel safe—areas that are quiet, private, and away from food sources. When we provide a litter box with fine, soft-textured litter, effective odor control, and a location that offers privacy, our cats instinctively recognize it as the ideal place to go.

The right litter setup signals to our cats, “Ahh yes, this is the spot!” By mimicking their natural preferences, we make sure they feel secure, comfortable, and confident using their litter box every time.

This Cat Litter Is Made From Plants

Most traditional cat litters are made from strip-mined clay or silica. Both end up in landfills when thrown away and are not biodegradable.

A new natural cat litter called Tailfeather is changing this with their eco-friendly, plant-based, clumping cat litter made from cassava.

It's fully biodegradable and 100% plastic-free, including the packaging. Tailfeather is delivered conveniently to your door, and each package lasts for 8 weeks, double the amount of other litters.

Meet Cat of the Day, Tommy

Our next April Cat Of The Month finalist, Tommy, is Daily Purr reader Cathy’s sweet and incredibly resilient companion.

After being rescued last year, Tommy found his forever home and has been making the most of it ever since. It hasn’t been an easy journey — he’s faced asthma, chronic illness, and even a stretch where he needed extra support to eat. But through it all, Tommy has stayed strong, gaining his health back and continuing to show up with quiet determination.

He doesn’t meow much, but his soft little chirps say everything. With his striking green eyes and curious personality, Tommy is always looking up, ready to see what’s next — and keeping life interesting along the way.

The cost of veterinary services has been rising recently, with some common surgical procedures costing up to $7,000. Pet insurance can help cover accidents, illnesses, and even routine care, with some plans reimbursing up to 90% of costs. Money.com's Best Pet Insurance list can help you find affordable coverage starting at just $10 a month so you can focus on what matters most – your furry friend's well-being.
