What Is ā€œTortitudeā€

Tortoiseshell cats, affectionately known for their "tortitude," often exhibit strong-willed, feisty, and independent personalities. While every cat is unique, many torties are known for being vocal, protective, and unpredictable, switching from affectionate cuddles to bursts of energy. Experts like Dr. Fern Slack compare torties to "the redheads of the cat world," noting they can be quick-tempered but equally loving.

Jackson Galaxy also supports the idea of tortitude, suggesting these cats are more energetically sensitive, which makes their personalities more vivid. However, Dr. Elizabeth Colleran argues that personality is shaped by both genetics and environment, not just coat color. Whether or not you believe in tortitude, one thing is clear—torties are captivating companions with a special charm that makes them stand out in any household.

Help Your Cat Live A Longer Life

Cats are like family. And even though indoor cats stay away from outdoor dangers, there are still plenty of household hazards they can get into, sometimes without us ever noticing. As the end of the year approaches, it’s a good time to make sure your cat has the care they need for any unexpected emergencies next year and beyond.

The no-annual-fee Nibbles Pet Rewards Credit Card includes free pet insurance for one eligible cat, giving you extra protection when your cat decides to explore something they shouldn’t. It’s simple coverage and everyday rewards, all in one place.

Nibbles is not a bank. The Nibbles Card is issued by Lead Bank. Fees and T&C apply.

How Far Can Your Cat Smell?

Cats' sense of smell is an incredible superpower, roughly 14 times stronger than ours! While it's hard to pinpoint exactly how far a cat can smell, studies suggest they can detect food from over 150 feet away—about the length of a football field. Cats can also follow familiar scents for miles, aiding their navigation skills.

The reason behind their heightened sense of smell lies in their anatomy: cats have over 200 million scent receptors in their noses, compared to just 5-6 million in humans. Additionally, they have a second olfactory organ called the Jacobsen’s organ that helps detect pheromones, adding another layer to their sensory abilities.

Cats use their sense of smell for several important tasks, from finding food to communicating with other cats and marking their territory. They rely on it far more than taste, especially since they can't detect sweet flavors.
