How Do Cats See the World?
Cats’ vision may seem mysterious, but it plays a key role in how they interact with the world. While their eyesight isn’t as sharp as ours during daylight, their ability to see in low light is exceptional, allowing them to hunt at dawn and dusk. Unlike humans, cats have a visual field of 200 degrees, offering broader peripheral vision. They’re also equipped with an extraordinary sense of motion detection, with a visual acuity of 20:30. This means they can spot details at 20 feet that a human would need to be 30 feet away to see clearly.
However, cats are colorblind in a way, seeing mainly in shades of blue and yellow, with red and green appearing as gray. Cats' eyes are also adapted for low-light conditions, thanks to the tapetum lucidum, which helps them see up to 7 times better than humans in dim light.

Cat of the Day, Sammie
Meet Sammie! A former stray who found his forever home after a successful TNR. Initially hesitant, Sammie proved to be too sweet to stay outside, so now he enjoys the comfort of his permanent indoor life.
Though a little camera shy, Sammie’s charm shines through. He’s a true example of how patience and kindness can turn a hesitant cat into a loving companion. It looks like he enjoys his cozy life behind the lens, but his heart is definitely all in!

Thank you to Daily Purr reader Cazzim for submitting Sammie for COTD!

Which Tastes Can't Cats Experience?
Cats have an extraordinary sense of smell, hearing, and vision, but their sense of taste is not as sophisticated as ours. Unlike humans and dogs, cats cannot taste sweetness. This is due to the absence of a crucial receptor gene for sweet flavors. While humans have around 9,000 taste buds, cats only have about 470, and their ability to detect sweet tastes is virtually non-existent. The key reason for this is evolutionary. Since cats are obligate carnivores, they have no need for carbohydrates or sweet flavors in their diet.
Instead, cats have an exceptional ability to taste bitterness. This heightened sensitivity to bitter tastes helps them avoid toxins in their environment, which often have a bitter flavor. Although they can also detect sour, salty, and umami flavors, it is the lack of sweet taste that makes cats unique compared to other mammals.
